It has been 50 years since America entered the space race on January 31, 1957. After trailing behind the Soviet Union and numerous problems and failures, the United States launched Explorer I, 50 years ago. Explorer stayed in orbit until 1970, having completed 58,000 orbits.
In honor of the date, I have included a cockpit video from the Shuttle Columbia take-off to enjoy.
